Call for Speakers
Proposing a session
The call for speakers is now closed.
Diversity
Our goal is to create an inclusive, respectful conference environment that invites participation from people of all races, ethnicities, genders, ages, abilities, religions, and sexual orientations.
We’re actively seeking to increase the diversity of our attendees and speakers, through our calls for proposals, and through dialogue with the communities we serve.
This is an ongoing process.
Here are some ways you can help us build a more diverse conference experience:
- Recommend appropriate speakers to the conference chairs. See the contact pages for information; you may also email us.
- Forward our call for proposals to relevant affinity groups with the message that we are looking for a diverse set of speakers.
- Suggest to potential speakers that they submit a proposal.
- To broaden participation, we’re offering mentoring and other support with your talk or workshop. If you would like to know more, please get in touch.
- Suggest ways that the onsite conference experience can be more welcoming and supportive, free from intimidation and marginalisation.
- Share your ideas and best practices for how we can realise our vision.
We value diversity in the communities we bring together, and we welcome your contributions to bringing balanced representation of the richness of our collective human experience.
All attendees are required to abide by the conference’s code of conduct.

Conference format
EAMS 2023 is an entirely online conference, with a mix of live sessions and web-based activities, with plenty of opportunity for discussion and collaboration.
- Developer updates from the people responsible for popular mathematical e-assessment systems, detailing the latest features.
- Talks on a variety of topics to do with e-assessment in mathematical disciplines.
- Poster-like material such as web pages, links or interactive activities.
- Try out the latest software with experts on-hand to answer your questions.
Conference activities will be accessed through a Moodle environment.
To reduce burn-out from staring at video all day, we will employ a mix of live video, pre-recorded talks, and web-based activites.
Live talks will take place over Zoom, with recordings available later. Live sessions will take place at 09:30 - 10:30 and 15:30 - 16:30 BST (UTC +1) each day.
We hope that the online format and longer timescale will allow participants to engage more deeply with the material presented.
Developer updates
We’d like the developers of three or four of the most popular mathematical e-assessment systems to give a brief summary of recent developments in their systems.
These sessions will be around 30 minutes each.
Talks
Talks can be either pre-recorded lightning talks of up to 10 minutes, or longer live talks of up to 30 minutes. Space for longer talks is limited.
Lightning talks will be presented in batches in live sessions, with time for questions after facilitated by a chairperson.
Feel free to offer presentations on as many topics as you have something to talk about.
The focus of the conference is assessment, and talks must relate specifically to mathematical subjects.
Suggested topics:
- Opportunities and risks of AI tools used by assessment systems or by students.
- New innovations in e-assessment technology.
- Access and equity:
- Technological accessibility – new developments, work done to improve accessibility, tips on producing accessible material.
- Ensuring equitable access for people and places with constraints on technology use.
- Implementing e-assessment in maths education practice:
- Institutional support for or resistance to implementation of e-assessment.
- Mathematics outside higher education, mathematics for other disciplines.
- Meaningful assessment to support innovative pedagogies.
- Learning design.
- Ensuring academic integrity, e.g. in proctored/invigilated exams.
- Assessment within blended or hybrid learning environments.
We are interested in presentations on these topics in the context of sharing research findings, good practice, or tips and tricks.
Poster-like material
We can put all sorts of material on the conference’s Moodle environment, for delegates to look at in their own time.
This could include accounts of your practice, links to resources, or even assessment material that you have written.
Any such material should be sent to [email protected].
Please bear in mind that the material will be viewed online, so a web page or text document would be more accessible than a PDF.
Software demos
The longer timescale and online-only format provides an opportunity for participants to try out new e-assessment software and ways of working.
If you can provide access to software in Moodle, through an LTI connection or otherwise, we can make it available to conference participants.
There might be e-assessment systems that you’ve only heard about from colleagues. EAMS is a chance to see those systems running, demonstrated by experts or even the developers themselves.
Live demonstrations of e-assessment software offer the opportunity for experts to demonstrate a system or technique, or a more hands-on workshop where attendees can try something out for themselves, led by an experienced facilitator.
Suggested demo formats:
- Masterclasses - demonstrate a feature in an e-assessment system that you use.
- Assessment-writing clinics, answering attendees’ questions to do with a particular system.
- Getting started - lead attendees through the first steps in using a system that is new to them.
Proceedings
After the conference is finished, recordings and other materials from talks will be archived on this website. We will obtain consent from all relevant parties for all material included in the archive.
